LIPOSUCTION

While following a healthy diet and a regular exercise regimen are
the best and safest way to lose weight, many people just cannot seem
to eliminate fat pockets from problem areas. This is particularly
true for the legs, buttocks, hips, stomach, arms, chin, neck, knees
and ankles. If you have reached a relatively normal weight and still
have specific areas from which you would like to remove excess fat,
you may be a good candidate for liposuction. Liposuction is a
procedure in which these pockets of fat are removed using suction
through several small incisions in the skin. The best candidates are
healthy patients with good skin elasticity and a relatively stable
weight. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; it is designed
to target problem areas that persist despite diet and exercise. Dr.
Lichten can help you determine whether liposuction will yield the
results you desire.

"Non-traditional" Liposuction (such as Smart Lipo™,
Laser Liposuction, or non-surgical liposuction) utilizes a laser
fiber, inserted under the skin. The fiber is moved back and forth
delivering energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to
rupture. The fat is then suctioned away. Theory also holds that the
laser energy interacts with the dermis of the skin resulting in skin
tightening.
Smart Lipo™ is limited to treating small areas of fat. Because of
this, it is not a replacement for conventional liposuction. Smart
Lipo™ and
Laser Liposuction are relatively new procedures within the field of
plastic surgery and as result, the long term effects are still
unknown.
Click here to read more about SmartLipo from the Wall Street
Journal. Lasers do, and will continue to, be an effective tool
for plastic surgeons, however there are associated risks. Be
sure to discuss your options with a board certified plastic surgeon
before considering any procedure.

ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)

Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as the tummy tuck, may be an
excellent surgical procedure for those who have excess fat or loose
skin around their midriff. Women who have had several pregnancies,
men who cannot lose their gut, some individuals who have a
protruding abdomen, and people who have lost weight only to be left
with loose, flabby skin in the abdominal region – no matter how many
stomach crunches they do – can become discouraged. For such people,
abdominoplasty offers a potential solution to their frustration.
The best candidates for the tummy tuck are individuals in good
overall shape and health with extra fat or loose skin in their
midsection. These areas do not improve despite diet and exercise.
Women should be done with having children. The effects of pregnancy
on the abdominal musculature leaves the muscles stretched, causing
the “pooch” that will not improve. Patients should also be at or
close to their goal weight. Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss
surgery; it is a procedure to resculpt the abdominal wall. The best
way to find out if a tummy tuck is the right choice for you is to
consult with Dr. Lichten.

WEIGHT LOSS AFTER
BARIATRIC SURGERY
When a person
loses a large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time,
particularly after bariatric weight loss surgery, this individual
has vast amounts of excess skin. The weight loss associated with
bariatric surgery is life changing, improving the patients overall
health by losing a hundred pounds or more. Unfortunately, this
leaves the patient “wearing” skin that fits their old body which
doesn’t reflect the dramatic changes bariatric surgery provides.
Body contouring after bariatric surgery is designed to “tailor” your
skin to fit the new you. This is accomplished the same way that you
tailor your clothes, but instead of inserting a pleat, the excess
skin is removed and stitched back together. The trade off is scars
in the areas where the skin is removed. Dr. Lichten works to make
the scarring as minimal as possible, but no one can promise you no
scars. Most patients accept this for the ability to fit into their
new clothes and to have their skin reflect the changes of their
bariatric surgery. Depending on your areas of concern, post-bariatric
body contouring often requires multiple surgeries to help the
patient’s skin fit his or her reduced body size. Feel free to
contact Central Ohio Plastic Surgery today to schedule a
consultation with Dr. Lichten to discuss your options.

BRACHIOPLASTY (ARM LIFT)
Excess skin on the upper arms is often an undesirable effect of
significant weight loss. Upper arm skin may become loose and sag
simply because of age. Brachioplasty can help correct these cosmetic
issues when the plastic surgeon removes the excess skin beneath the
arms and tightens the flabby tissue as well. This procedure also
commonly performed for patients after bariatric surgery. Excess fat
in the upper arms may also be addressed by liposuction. Contact Dr.
Lichten to see which procedure may be right for you.

THIGH LIFT
Similar to an arm lift and a tummy tuck, the thigh lift serves to
tone sagging skin and flabby tissue following a major weight loss or
excessive fat deposits in the thigh area. Again, excess skin is
removed and replaced by scars. By surgically removing excess skin
and tissue, the thighs may become trimmer and contoured. If you
suffer from sagging, bulging, unattractive skin on your thighs, you
might be an excellent candidate for a thigh lift with or without
liposuction. Contact Central Ohio Plastic Surgery using the links on
