Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to increase and enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts.  Many women choose to have breast implants to reverse the effects of pregnancy and nursing, or to enhance an area of their figure that they always felt uncomfortable with.  Whatever the reason, the decision to undergo breast augmentation is a personal one.  At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, we would be happy to discuss your options with you.

Breast augmentation may be approached through different incisions.  At Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, we prefer to approach breast augmentation with implants placed in the natural skin crease below the breast.  In our experience, this “inframammary” incision affords the best exposure for placement of the implant with minimal scarring in an inconspicuous location.

At surgery, a synthetic implant is inserted behind the breast tissue to enlarge and improve the contour of the bust.  The majority of patients have the implants placed behind the chest muscles, but there may be advantages in selected women to placing the implants above the muscles. 

For the actual implants used, we typically utilize smooth, round, saline implants.  These provide a natural appearance for our patients with lower rupture and complications rates than textured or anatomic implants.  As of November 17, 2006, Silicone implants were approved by the FDA for use in primary breast augmentation for women over the age of 22.

BREAST LIFT

Breast reconstruction offers women who have undergone mastectomy (removal of the breast due to cancer or a pre-cancerous condition) or women who have a breast deformity the means to restore their womanly shape and, in turn, to restore their self-confidence. 

Depending on your specific situation, breast reconstruction is a very delicate procedure in which both timing and technique are important.  Surgery may be performed immediately following a mastectomy, or it may be best completed at a later time.  Reconstruction may be done with a tissue expander, implant or through utilizing your body’s own tissues (muscle flap reconstruction).  Which combination of options is best for you is something you should determine in conjunction with your breast surgeon, oncologist, and with Dr. Lichten.

After the initial reconstruction, patients may undergo further operations to exchange the tissue expander for a permanent implant, revise the reconstructed breast, reconstruct the nipple and areola, or perform an operation on the opposite breast to achieve better symmetry.  Dr. Lichten and everyone at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery will help you through every step of the reconstructive process.

GYNECOMASTIA:  MALE BREAST REDUCTION

For some men, extra fat and tissue located in the area of their chest is a source of embarrassment and self-consciousness.  Fortunately, gynecomastia surgery, male breast reduction, is a surgical measure by which to resolve this condition.  Two variations of this procedure are available, depending on your needs.  If fat, skin and glandular tissue need to be removed, the surgery will usually be done using a scalpel or scalpel with liposuction.
