Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty at our Lancaster and Columbus-area practice, is a popular cosmetic procedure amongst men and women because of how important a role the eyes play when it comes to the appearance of your face. Your eyes reveal more about your age and emotional state than any other facial feature. Droopy, puffy eyes and eyelids may create a fatigued appearance that makes you look older than your actual age. Board-certified plastic surgeon Jason Lichten, MD performs eyelid surgery to help you create a younger and more refreshed eye appearance. This procedure can be used to remove fat and excess skin and retighten muscle in both the upper and lower eyelids.

The Procedure

Blepharoplasty can restore the skin around the eyes to a more youthful state as well as reduce the signs of aging. When your upper lids have sagged, the surgery may even serve to improve impaired vision.

In general, there are two types of eyelid surgery. Upper-eyelid surgery, also known as upper blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift, focuses on lifting, tightening, and rejuvenating the appearance of the upper eyelids. Lower eyelid surgery, also known as eye bag surgery or lower blepharoplasty, is an excellent choice for patients who want to get rid of puffy bags that have formed underneath their eyes.

Both upper and lower eyelid surgery requires incisions along natural lines and creases of your eyelids, where any scarring will be well hidden. Through these incisions, Dr. Lichten tightens and trims underlying fat and muscle tissue before closing the incisions with fine sutures. Dr. Lichten also performs lower eyelid surgery using transconjunctival blepharoplasty, with incisions entirely concealed inside the lower lid. Eyelid surgery can take anywhere between one to three hours depending on the extent of the procedure.

Recovering from Eyelid Surgery

Some minor pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising can be expected following blepharoplasty. Swelling and bruising should subside over the next few days of your recovery. On average, patients feel comfortable returning to work after around 10 days. It can take around two months to fully recover and for your final results to come in.

Blepharoplasty may be combined with facelift surgery in Columbus, Ohio as well as other procedures. In addition, Dr. Lichten may recommend BOTOX® Cosmetic to enhance the results of blepharoplasty.
