Lip Injections – JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA and JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC 

Central Ohio Plastic Surgery is proud that Dr. Jason Lichten was one of the first injectors in the country to be able to offer advanced options such as JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA, JUVÉDERM VOLLURE, and Restylane Silk. Although dermal fillers have been used to enhance the lips for years, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA is one of the first fillers approved by the FDA that is specifically designed to treat your lips and the surrounding lines (sometimes called smokers’ lines).  Because it is a thinner formula and is delivered through a smaller needle, JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA enables plastic surgeons like Dr. Lichten to inject with more precision, creating a more natural look. In addition, for patients wanting a fuller look, Dr. Lichten can achieve that using JUVÉDERM Ultra XC. 

In the past, some of our patients have been hesitant to treat the lip area because of the “fake-looking” full lips of many Hollywood celebrities (think Goldie Hawn’s character in The First Wives Club).  Developments in technique have evolved to enable plastic surgeons like Dr. Lichten to create a soft, natural improvement and restore definition in the cupid’s bow at the top of the mouth. The fact is, it’s not what’s in the syringe, it’s who is holding it. 

Dermal filler injections can restore balance and a softer, smoother look to this sensitive area, and options such as JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA can provide subtle volume to the lips in addition to softening the appearance of vertical lines around the lips (these are known as “perioral rhytids”). During your consultation with Dr. Lichten, he will evaluate your needs and determine whether these options for lip augmentation offer ideal solutions for your goals. How Is VOLBELLA Different from Other Products?

VOLBELLA is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid (HA), which occurs naturally in the body. HA is also the main ingredient in JUVÉDERM and Restylane®. Although the primary ingredient in VOLBELLA is HA, VOLBELLA is different from other fillers in that it uses Vycross® technology, which blends different molecular weights of the HA and has been shown to increase the duration of the gel. In addition, VOLBELLA has a customized formulation that uses a lower concentration of HA, while still providing a longer duration. This is the same technology found in JUVÉDERM VOLLURE and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA for cheekbones, but VOLBELLA is specifically designed for the lips.

VOLBELLA is the most subtle of the injectable lip fillers. Some patients think of it as a “starter lip.” It is ideal for patients who are looking for an understated change or those who are having lip injections for the first time.

Is There Downtime Necessary After Lip Filler Injections?

As with any injection, you should be able to return to work immediately. You may, however, experience some bruising, swelling or puffiness. All of these effects are temporary. If you have a special event coming up, we strongly recommend that you schedule your injections at least two to three weeks before the event.

How Long Do JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA and JUVÉDERM Ultra XC Last?

JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA can last up to a year, while JUVÉDERM Ultra XC lasts approximately nine months.

How Do I Know if My Injector Is Qualified?

No one can guarantee your results. You can, however, ensure that your injector has had the right training. At many places, injections are performed by nurses or other practitioners. It is important to know that at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, your injections will always be done by Dr. Lichten, a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience. Dr. Lichten is an Allergan Platinum Injector, which means he injects more BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM than 95% of practitioners in the United States.
