Dr. Jason Lichten, our Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and Krista, our licensed Aesthetician have researched many, many skincare lines currently on the market. Based on their extensive survey, they have selected 4 lines: skinbetter, Circadia, EltaMD, and ColoreScience Sunscreen as the skincare that we carry at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery. Dr. Lichten and Krista believe that these products are backed by strong scientific research and offer you advanced ways to maintain a healthy, youthful skin tone.
Our whole staff has been extensively trained in our skincare lines. We are equipped to create customized treatment plans and to select the right products to help you reach your skincare goals. We recognize that skin changes as we age, and we are prepared to work with you every step of the aging process – modifying your routine as needed – to be your long-term partner in beauty.
There are many skincare products on the market today. Be aware, however, that if you buy your products at the drugstore or the mall, you are not getting medical-grade skincare. Because of FDA regulations, any product that penetrates the surface of the skin must be overseen by a doctor. Therefore, anything you buy at the mall is necessarily only fixing the surface layer of your skin, rather than addressing the cellular layers of the skin to effect real change. In addition, many retail cosmetic products advertise that they contain Tretinoin, Hyaluronic Acid or Hydroquinone, which are ingredients that plastic surgeons have been recommending for years. A closer look at those department store/ drugstore products will show that those ingredients are very far down on the list of active ingredients as opposed to the potent concentration you will get in medical-grade skincare.
Of all the skincare products available today, Dr. Lichten has selected three products as his “must-haves” for almost everyone. Dr. Lichten’s Must Haves are Tretinoin, a Serum, and Sunscreen.
Tretinoin – Tretinoin is a form of Retin A. It promotes skin cell turnover, which resurfaces the skin and helps with fine lines and wrinkles. Tretinoin comes in a number of strengths and formulations, so it is important for you to have expert guidance as you try these products.
Serum – a lightweight serum hydrator like skinbetter Interfuse will leave you with healthier, more radiant skin.
Sunscreen – For those of you who have spent any time with Dr. Lichten, it will come as no surprise that his third “must have” is sunscreen. He believes strongly that year-round protection against UV is the best way to prevent skin cancer and the signs of aging. We have a number of different options for sunscreen to match your lifestyle, skin type, and budget.
Skinbetter takes pride in leveraging advanced chemistry to help their skin care products do more. It offers an uncomplicated skincare approach. Just one skinbetter product can deliver noticeable results; two or three products can really change how you feel about your skin. Skinbetter products ensure real results that you can really see.
We carry most products in the skinbetter line, so we can create a customized skincare regimen designed to suit your individual needs and goals. Our patients have been loving the results they get from skinbetter.
Skinbetter is only available through doctors’ offices. The main components of the skinbetter line are:
AlphaRet – We have taught our patients for years about the benefits of retinols and retinoic acid (Retin-A or tretinoin) in improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well has smoothing out uneven tones and texture. AlphaRet is innovative in delivering these results with little to none of the irritation associated with other retinol products. This combines a retinoid with lactic acid to promote anti-aging, along with moisture and anti-oxidants to combat the dryness of traditional retinol based products.
Even Tone Correcting Serum – A non-hydroquinone, non-retinol formula that improves the appearance of brown spots, sun damage and hyperpigmentation. For uneven skin tone, the mask of pregnancy, liver spots and other visible blemishes in the skin, Even can help balance the appearance of the skin without using hydroquinone. Because there is no HQ in this product, patients can stay on Even beyond the limits of a hydroquinone treatment and keep their even skin tone.
Alto Defense Serum – Alto is skinbetter’s daily antioxidant treatment for skin protection and the improvement of uneven tone and redness. Where Even Tone Correcting Serum targets the brown pigments in the skin, Alto can help reduce the red tones in the skin. Additionally, Alto provides 19 antioxidant agents; neutralizes free radicals caused from the sun and other environmental factors; and enhances the skin’s radiance, vitality and natural tone.
Interfuse Treatment Cream – Interfuse (which includes Face, Eyes or Lines) is a needle-free hyaluronic acid solution to soften and improve the appearance of expression lines. This can soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, nose and face, complementing Juvéderm and Botox treatments done by Dr. Lichten in the office. Along with the hyaluronic acid, Interfuse combines amino acid building blocks, peptides and Vitamin C to help rejuvenate the skin.
Starter Kit – Krista has gathered a few of her favorite skinbetter products into a starter kit that works for most of our patients. A cleanser added to the AlphaRet and Even work for most skin types. Our patients have been loving this kit and come back to restock and add more pieces that work for their specific needs.
Circadia, founded by Dr. Peter T. Pugliese, is a professional skincare brand based on the skin and body’s natural circadian rhythms. Chronobiology, the science of defending skin from environmental damage during the day, and stimulating internal repair mechanisms during sleep is at the core of our concept. Circadia’s formulations combine pure botanicals, stem cells, second generation vitamins, and innovative peptide technology to achieve optimal skin health and beauty. Circadia’s specialty treatment products utilize these technologies to address a multitude of skin conditions from head to toe, including aging, acne, dehydration, pigmentation, and rosacea.
Our favorite Circadia products include their line of customizable facials which give our patients a fresh, healthy glow.
For 25 years, EltaMD has perfected the art of sun care- that’s why it is the #1 physician recommended sunscreen brand. With a broad range of skin-type specific options for both face and body, complexion-enhancing ingredients such as transparent zinc, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin E, we feel confident that you can find your right fit with EltaMD. Dr. Lichten and Krista’s favorite products are:
UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46- Lightweight and oil-free, this formulation helps to calm and protect sensitive and breakout-prone skin, can be worn alone or under makeup, and is available in sheer or lightly tinted.
UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50- Designed for those active and on-the-go patients, this 80-minute water-resistant, antioxidant-rich product will get you through any game you can play!
We have carried ColoreScience powder sunscreen for well over a decade and a half. It is a consistent favorite among our patients and staff. ColoreScience’s unique powder formulation makes it ideal for children, people who are bald or have thinning hair and golfers who don’t want to get their hands greasy with traditional sunscreen, but who want to reapply before the back 9.
ColoreScience contains an SPF 50 that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It has earned the prestigious National Skin Cancer Foundation seal of approval. Recent innovations to the product now enable the sunscreen to protect against the blue (HEV) light that comes from our smart phones. Their trademarked Enviroscreen technology not only defends against these rays, but it also repairs skin with antioxidants and moisturizers that nourish the skin.
Most sunscreens on the market are a chemical block which use chemicals to neutralize the harmful effects of the sun. ColoreScience is a physical block, which means it stops the rays from penetrating the skin in the first place. Dr. Lichten strongly recommends a physical block as the safer, more effective alternative.
