Q: What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

A: BOTOX is prescription medicine injected into muscles. It is used to temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines),in the forehead and the crows’ feet.

Q: How does BOTOX work?

A: BOTOX is injected directly into the muscles. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity that causes the moderate to severe lines to form, leaving the areas smooth.

Q: When will I see results from a BOTOX treatment?

A: You should see a see a marked improvement in 3-7 days, sometimes up to 2 weeks. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days. Individual results will vary.

Q: How long does BOTOX last?

A: Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months. Your own results may vary – be sure to ask Dr. Lichten or our staff about what you can expect and when to schedule your next appointment.

Q: Is treatment with BOTOX painful?

A: Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injection, Dr. Lichten will numb the area with a cold pack. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Most patients are in and out of our office without downtime following treatment.

The most common side effect is bruising around the injection sites. Occasionally, patients experience localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding.

Q: Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

A: Although the results are visible, BOTOX will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows or around your eyes.

Q: Can I use Botox to treat the wrinkles around my mouth and jowls?

A: For wrinkles on the lower half of the face, Dr. Lichten has gotten excellent results using facial fillers like Juvéderm and Restylane. Since these wrinkles are typically caused by soft tissue loss, fillers will yield better results than treating the muscles with Botox.

Q: What will happen to the frown lines between my brows if I choose not to continue treatments?

A: If you do not continue treatments, the lines will gradually return to the way they looked before treatment.

Q: Whom should I call with questions?

A: Call our staff at (740) 653-5064 or (614) 862-8008 with any questions or concerns. We are here Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00

Q: How do I know if my injector is qualified?

A: No one can guarantee your results. You can, however, ensure that your injector has had the right training. At many places, injections are performed by nurses or other practitioners. It is important to know that at Central Ohio Plastic Surgery, your injections will always be done by Dr. Lichten, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with over 20 years of experience. Dr. Lichten is an Allergan Platinum Injector, which means he injects more Botox and Juvederm than 95% of practitioners in the United States. He brings his extensive experience and training to every set of injections.
